The engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel stands in front of the chains of the ship The Great Eastern which he designed. The photograph was taken in 1857 and is a depiction of the engineer as a hero. Isambard was behind much of the industrial revolution in England in the middle of the 19th century and was known for his grand designs as well as his personality. The Great Eastern was the crowning glory of his work, the great pride of the nation and by far the largest ship that had ever been built at this time.

Isambard was a man of humble bearing and strength but with an exceedingly nervous energy. He was never seen without a cigar in the corner of his mouth and a cigar box hanging from a brace across his back. He was known for his determination and was not afraid to involve himself in all aspects of a work. Something that can be seen on his soiled suit pants.

Photographer: Robert Howlett | Created: 1857.
