Poster featuring the painting Club Night by George Bellows from 1907.

Club Night features a boxing match at a New York City club owned by Tom Sharkey, a former heavyweight champion. A smoky haze envelops the scene.

At this time, boxing was illegal in New York, but Sharkey still organized matches in his private clubs. By allowing participants to pay membership fees instead of entry fees, he managed to circumvent the law. The public's generally positive response to this controversial topic reflected an ambivalent attitude towards the sport.

When criticized for not accurately representing certain technical aspects of the sport, Bellows replied: " I know nothing about boxing. I just paint two men trying to kill each other. "
