Posts with one scientific illustration of a spotted perch (Perch Maculata) by the famous German medical doctor Marcus Elieser Bloch from the 18th century. Bloch is considered one of the most important ichthyologists (the science that studies fish) of the 18th century.
The text in the corner of the poster gives the fish's scientific name and translations in various languages, including German ("Der Gefleckte Barsch"), French ("La Tachetée") and English ("The Dropped Fish").
Between the years 1782 and 1795 Bloch published Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische ("General History of Fishermen") - a comprehensive work in 12 volumes with beautifully illustrated fish. This is widely regarded as the most outstanding book in ichthyology.
Bloch's first works focused on German fishes and were completely original, based on his own observations – reliable and thorough. His studies of foreign fish, however, were based on the work of others. This meant that Bloch fell victim to many of the misconceptions that seeped through the vast amount of travelogues during the 18th century. His illustrations could therefore on the one hand show an incredibly precise precision, on the other hand a seductive imaginativeness. Each of the hand-colored illustrations is identified in several different languages.
