Poster with August Malmström's most famous work, Älvalek from 1866. Until 1872, the original was owned by King Karl XV. The painting depicts river dancing, a weather phenomenon where moist air condenses and forms microscopic water droplets that stay suspended. In old folklore, the fog was believed to be dancing fairies. According to folklore, fairies lived in nature and could be seen dancing on hills, mountains and forests. Fairies were beautiful but dangerous and could make people sick.
In Älvalek we see a swirling morning mist with fairies dancing hand in hand like a thin veil through a moonlit, still landscape. Trees stand like dark shadows against the sky.
