In the painting, Larsson presents a harmonious scene where the Larsson family enjoys breakfast outdoors under the shadowy crown of a large birch. Larsson himself expressed his love for the place, especially because of the large birch that offered cooling shade on hot summer days.
Larsson was known for depicting everyday life situations and for rendering them with a warm and bright atmosphere. He is best known for his paintings of idyllic Swedish home environments and family scenes, which have become characteristic of the Swedish art movement known as "Swedish home".
