Advertising poster for Motorspriten from the magazine Motor 1918.

The motor spirit is coming! was the message at the beginning of the 20th century. Research has been conducted to develop and introduce alternatives to oil-based fuels since the beginning of the 20th century. Fuel alternatives have varied from 1910s sulphite alcohol to 1940s natural gas, 1970s methanol and 21st century various types of ethanol .

The driving force has been everything from securing a national supply of fuel, to making socio-economic gains and later from the 90s onwards for climate reasons. The realization that oil is a finite resource has long driven the work.
