Gustav II Adolf, also known as Gustav II Adolf the Great, was king of Sweden from 1611 until his death in 1632. He was one of Sweden's most influential and successful monarchs and played a decisive role in the country's history during the time he ruled.¨
The painting depicts King Gustav II Adolf's farewell to his troops before the Thirty Years' War. Lindberg depicts the king in an elevated position in front of his soldiers, who are ready for battle. The work captures the dramatic mood with the king as the central figure.
