Ingemar Johansson won the match by technical knockout after two minutes and three seconds of the third round, after flooring Patterson seven times. He thus became Sweden's first and so far only world champion in heavyweight boxing. Over three million Swedes listened to the match report. The attention in Sweden was enormous.
In the same year, Ingemar Johansson was named Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press and Sportsman of the Year by the magazine Sports Illustrated. When he retired from boxing in 1963, he had won 26 out of 28 fights in the professional ring, 17 of them by knockout.
