Poster with a war map of Europe, seen through French eyes. The map is illustrated by the famous French cartographer Paul Hadol in 1870 and shows the Franco-German war that took place between 1870-1871.
The map clearly shows how the war spread across Europe, with France and Germany as the central players. France is portrayed as the larger and more powerful country, reflecting France's self-image as a dominant European power at this time.
France, on the other hand, lost the war and it was a great loss, both territorially and economically for the country. As a result of the war, France lost the Alsace-Lorraine area to Germany. In addition, the war led to a major economic crisis in France, which hit the country hard in the following years. The war loss caused French revanchism which contributed to the outbreak of the First World War. Germany's economy was significantly stimulated by the war reparations and led to increased industrialization.
