King Gustav I of Sweden, Gustav Vasa, was a central figure in Sweden's history during the transition from the Middle Ages to the early modern era.
Born out of the tragedy of the Stockholm massacre in 1520, where his father and relatives were murdered by the Danish king Christian II, Gustav Vasa became a leading rebel against the Danish occupation. Gathering support from both peasants and nobles, he succeeded in ousting the Danes and was crowned king of an independent Sweden in 1523. His royal reign marked the beginning of the Vasa era and the establishment of a strong monarchy in Sweden.
Gustav Vasa was not only a political leader but also a reformer. During his reign, the Protestant Reformation was carried out in Sweden. By breaking with the Catholic Church and introducing the Lutheran doctrine, he not only changed Sweden's religious landscape but also its cultural and social structure.
