Poster with the painting Lena and the Knight Dance by John Bauer from 1915. The picture was an illustration for WE Björk's fairy tale The Golden Keys in the fairy tale collection Among Elves and Trolls .
The story is about the poor shepherd girl Lena who receives a golden key that leads to the garden of her dreams. The key is a secret she is not allowed to tell, but despite this she sacrifices eternal happiness to save the young king and eventually becomes his bride.
In the picture we see the new princess Lena dancing with the young king in the meadow. The background and foreground of the painting are heavily worked with birds and a flower-filled meadow.
Iconic John Bauer is known for his fairytale motifs with goblins and princesses and he has had a great influence on Nordic folklore and storytelling.
