North and South Harbor Streets

A very old photograph of the North and South Harbors in Gothenburg at the end of the 19th century. In the picture we see the Great Harbor Canal and to the left the German Church.
A little further back to the left in the picture is Gustav Adolfs torg and today also Nordstan. A beautiful picture that shows how smaller sailboats with cargo went far into the canals in the past. The Stora Hamnkanalen began to be built as early as the 1620s on behalf of Gothenburg's founder Gustav II Adolf. It would "serve the sea-going goods traffic with smaller ships, which brought grain and other necessary goods". Right up until the 20th century, many private individuals had their boats in Stora Hamnkanalen, but this is no longer the case.
