Poster with motif of the scientific illustration Ok Naturalia created by the German natural scientist Lorenz Oken in the 19th century. In the picture we see several different kinds of fish, for example rays, sharks and eels.
Oken was a German naturalist, philosopher and physician who was born Okenfuss, but adopted the name Oken during his medical training in Freiburg, Bavaria.
After being professor of medicine at the University of Jena, he turned to philosophy and natural science. Oken became a leading figure as editor of the influential, and sometimes controversial, journal Isis, where he was active for almost 30 years.
Oken was known for his prolific writing and published many philosophical treatises during his lifetime. His most famous work is the 13-volume series "Naturgeschichte für alle Stände" (Natural history for all walks of life), first published in 1831.
