The Skarpnäcksloppet motor race in Stockholm 1952. The cars are lined up at the starting line ready to race.
Although the cars were not as fast as today's racing cars, they were definitely less safe, making racing in the 50's an extremely dangerous sport. Inferior protective equipment and a car design with low safety caused several serious accidents.
In 1955 during the world-famous Le Mans racing event, the worst accident ever in the history of motorsport occurred when a car flew off the track and crashed into the sea of spectators. After these incidents, safety awareness increased and both the cars, the tracks and the protective equipment were improved.
