The year is 1916 and in the picture we see an elderly man in a rowing boat in the port of Gothenburg. When the photo was taken, the man, whose name was Lars Svensson, was 77 years old.
The port of Gothenburg has since its inception played a central role in Sweden's contacts and trade with the rest of the world. It is today Scandinavia's largest port and the gateway to the world for large parts of Swedish industry.
It was in Gothenburg's harbor that the Swedish East Indian Company made Gothenburg the trading center of Northern Europe with its voyages to Asia during the 18th century. It was also where 100,000 Swedes immigrated to the USA during the 19th century.
