In 1947, Christian Dior launched The New Look, which came to have a major influence on women's fashion during the 50s. The war and the rationing times were over and the 50s awakened a longing for luxury and femininity.
In the photograph, taken sometime between 1950-1955, we see a woman in a period dress and hat sitting on a chair in a square and having taken off her pumps. An umbrella is leaning against the back of the chair.
Pumps as heels for women have been around since 1838 and remain a classic even today with iconic models from not least Roger Vivier, Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin.
