Loosely applied brown, purple and blue tones evoke a sense of melancholy and anticipation. The window acts as a symbolic barrier that separates the interior from the outside world. The sense of mystery is deepened and complicated by the fact that we cannot see the expression on the girl's face, nor do we know what she is secretly observing.
Edvard Munch is Norway's foremost artist and became a source of inspiration for German Expressionism. Munch's works are inspired by existential themes such as melancholy, jealousy and anxiety, but also the Norwegian nature and places where he lived.
