Shared victory in the Vasaloppet on March 11, 1928. In the photo we see Sven Utterström and "Särna" Hedlund riding side by side towards the goal. They cross the finish line in Mora at the same time, much to the dismay of the crown hill.
They themselves considered it a dead race, but a winner seemed to have to be chosen and the finish judges thought Hedlund was first. However, Utterström and Hedlund resolved the issue themselves afterwards. Their gold and silver medal they sawed apart, and soldered together with the other's half.
Sven Utterström. 1901-1979. Swedish cross-country skier who competed for Bodens BK. Winner in the Vasaloppet in 1925 and 1928, Olympic gold in 18 km in 1932. Per-Erik Hedlund, also a prominent skier with gold in the 50 km in the Olympics in St. Moritz in the same year.
