Women's Rights

Women's suffrage had been brought up in Sweden's Riksdag several times around the turn of the century but voted down. By 1909 universal male suffrage was introduced which meant that they the only ones who were not allowed to vote, apart from women, were men who were in mental hospitals or in prison.
All over Europe, the Nordic countries and England, women actively demonstrated for equal conditions. This iconic photograph from 1914 shows women's rights activist Elin Wägner standing in front of the 30 ribbons with 351,454 signatures that were required for women's suffrage. Sweden introduced female suffrage in 1919, later than Finland (1906), Norway (1913) and Denmark (1915).
