From canvas to woodblock
In the summer of 1893 in Åsgårdstrand, Edvard Munch worked on Moonlight in parallel with Summer Night. The Voice, another work of related mood. But the motif did not remain in the first painting. Three years later, he reworked the composition into a color woodcut, and in 1901 he returned to the idea yet again. This shows how Munch often treated an image as something fluid rather than finished. A composition could be tested in several techniques and over several years, while color, simplification, and expression changed. Moonlight is therefore both an individual work and a stage in a longer exploration of the same visual idea.
