The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting Branch of the Seine near Giverny by Claude Monet from 1897 . Monet painted 18 works during his morning walks on the River Seine. Monet anchored his flat-bottomed boat on the river bank and painted several works as the light shifted between sunrise and morning. To keep the various works in order, he numbered them and placed them in specially built compartments inside the boat.
Claude Monet was born in 1840 in Paris and, together with Auguste Renoir, was one of the main pioneers of Impressionism and was also the one who gave the movement its name through his painting Impression. Sunrise from 1872.
Monet was close friends with another famous artist Eduardo Manet who among other things painted A Parisian Lady . With the help of Manet, Monet, in 1871, got hold of a residence in a suburb of Paris named Argenteuil. After the move, Monet began one of the most productive phases of his career, creating many of his most famous works.
