The Danish Biographical Encyclopedia points to an elegant construction: the light effect that appears to come from the moon was created with artificial studio lighting. Krøyer thus built his twilight atmosphere as much in the studio as on the Skagen coast – one of the painting’s most refined contradictions.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Summer evening on Skagen's southern shore by the famous Danish artist Peder Severin Krøyer.

This atmospheric work dates from 1892. Krøyer was inspired at a dinner party at his summer residence in Skagen. After dinner, the guests went down to the beach and he painted the artist Anna Ancher and his wife Marie Krøyer as they walked along the beach.

Peder was born in Stavanger to Norwegian parents but grew up as a foster son in Denmark with his sister and Danish brother-in-law Krøyer, whose surname he came to adopt. Peder developed into one of Scandinavia's leading painters.
