Fifteen Minutes to a Record
The same year as this photograph was taken, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly an autogyro – after only fifteen minutes of instruction. The rotorcraft could take off and land on considerably shorter runways than the conventional aircraft of the time, and the record became another step in her work for women’s place in the air.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a 1934 photograph of Amelia Earhart - a famous American pilot and the first woman to fly across the Atlantic.

Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. Presumably Amelia died in the western Pacific when she disappeared without a trace during a flight around the world in 1937.

She became famous through a series of daring long flights and worked for women to be given the same opportunities as men to train in aviation.
