A Bloom on a Specific Date
The painting contains a small cultivation note in German: the “Indian pineapple” had come into bloom at Ulriksdal on 30 July 1729. Rather than being solely a decorative plant study, the painting thus also became a dated record of a rare success in the royal orangery.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with a painting of a pineapple plant from 1729 by the Swedish artist David von Cöln. Today the painting hangs at Gripsholm Castle and the artist is represented at the National Museum.

In most countries, the exotic fruit has a name similar to "pineapple". The word pineapple is derived from an ancient Indian tribal word "nanas", meaning "excellent fruit". Ever since the 16th century, pineapples have been a coveted symbol of social class, prestige and hospitality.

If you order from Norway, your order will be delivered with Fedex; to Sweden and the rest of the world with DHL. Your package is normally delivered to your nearest pickup point!
