A Chinese voice, not Confucius
The words are often attributed to Confucius, but the earliest documented formulation appears in Oliver Goldsmith’s satire The Citizen of the World from 1762. There, they are spoken by the fictional Chinese philosopher Lien Chi Altangi, who comments on British society in letters from London. The Chinese narrative voice may have helped give the quotation the wrong author.

The story behind the motif

Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall - Confucius.

Confucius is considered one of the most important and influential individuals in human history. He was a philosopher and politician from China who lived between 551 BC - 479 BC. Confucius' philosophy dealt with personal and state morality, social relations, justice, kindness and genuineness.

His philosophy was also that all humans are born equal, and are shaped through education and practice. One of his most famous teachings was a variation on the Golden Rule, better known as the Silver Rule: "Do not do unto others as you would not have them do unto you". Many of his works have had great significance in China and have been learned by heart by educated Chinese.

Choose between the colors antique white, ash grey, nude, beige, navy blue and dark green.
