Hand-Coloured Haute Couture
The illustration was no ordinary fashion-magazine image: it was printed as plate 54 in the September 1921 issue of La Gazette du Bon Ton and coloured by hand using the pochoir technique. It presented an evening dress from Worth, one of Paris’s most influential couture houses.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an illustration from a French fashion magazine in 1921. On the illustration you see the text Des robes dans la nuit: Robe du soir, de Worth - French for Dresses in the night: Evening dress by Worth.

Worth was one of the leading couture houses of the 1920s . The illustrator's name was George Barbier and he was a very prominent artist from France celebrated by not least Vogue for his contribution to the world of fashion during the early 20th century. Gazette du Bon Ton in which the illustration was published was one of the most influential and exclusive fashion magazines of its time. The newspaper bore witness to the carefree and flamboyant lifestyle of the privileged circles. Fashion was art and Paris its theater stage.

Illustrator: George Barbier | Created: 1921.
