The Quote Has No Source
The well-known wording cannot be substantiated as a quotation from George Eliot. Researchers who have examined her novels, letters and early collections of quotations have not found it, and one Eliot specialist believes the attribution may have spread through a greeting-card company. Mary Ann Evans began using the pseudonym George Eliot in 1857.

The story behind the motif

It is never too late to be what you might have been - George Eliot

Mary Ann Evans, better known by her male author name and alias George Eliot, was a British woman, writer and journalist who lived between 1819 – 1880.

She was one of the leading writers of the Victorian era and admired by many, not least by Charles Dickens of the world perhaps the most famous author of all time.

Research indicates that the literary landscape was more gender-balanced in the 19th century compared to the 20th century, where women were less frequently represented in literature and the presence of female authors markedly declined. This shift is attributed to the rising prestige of the writing profession in the 20th century, which drew a greater number of men to the field, overshadowing female participation and altering the dynamics of literary representation.
