After the Years in Paris
When Jenny Nyström painted the portrait in 1889, she had recently returned from four years of art studies in Paris. There she attended the Académie Colarossi and Académie Julian, two of the independent schools that offered instruction to women. She later became so closely associated with her Christmas gnomes that her assured portraiture was long overshadowed.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the beautiful pastel painting Portrait of a Lady by the iconic Jenny Nyström from 1885. In the picture we see a beautiful woman holding a bouquet of wild flowers - daisies and cornflowers.

Jenny Nyström (1854-1946) was a Swedish, well-known artist and illustrator. She is best known for having given Santa a face in Sweden, mainly through her illustrations of Christmas cards. Jenny is today an artist whose nostalgic works bring many people back to the Christmas of their childhood.
