The story behind the motif

This indicates the importance Degas attached to the composition of the preparatory drawings he made for almost every figure in the picture - from the dancer scratching his back in the foreground to the woman yawning next to the stage.
Edgar Degas was a French artist, printmaker and sculptor. In addition to portraits, his early pictures were often history paintings. Later, Degas also became interested in modern Parisian life and was influenced by the artist Édouard Manet. Degas' innovation and his sense of movement in the images make him one of the great early modernists of the late 19th century.
