First a Sketch, Then Pastel
The Met holds two closely related versions of this composition. This one, made around 1874, is probably considered the later because the pastel is handled more freely. Both were built over ink drawings on paper – an unusual working method for Degas, leaving the work to bear traces of both sketch and reworking.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring a beautiful painting from 1874 by iconic artist Edgar Degas. The painting is called The Rehearsal Onstage and is one of two versions of the subject.

Of the two versions, this one is more freely executed, suggesting that it probably came second. Several of the figures in this pastel differ from those in the other version: The Rehearsal of the Ballet Onstage. Among other things, the dancer seen from behind on the far left, plucking with his bracelet. Both works were executed over an ink drawing on paper, which was an unusual practice for Degas.

Edgar Degas was a French artist, printmaker and sculptor. In addition to portraits, his early pictures were often history paintings. Later, Degas also became interested in modern Parisian life and was influenced by the artist Édouard Manet. Degas' innovation and his sense of movement in the images make him one of the great early modernists of the late 19th century.
