The story behind the motif

Poster featuring a fantastic abstract work in blue and gray tones by August Strindberg from 1892. The painting is called Storm in the Archipelago. The Flying Dutchman and shows the Stockholm archipelago in a dramatic storm (English title Storm in the Skerries. The Flying Dutchman ). The agitated blue-green sea meets a blue-black and cloud-heavy stormy sky.

The painting was an outlet for the emotional chaos that the iconic writer and artist August Strindberg experienced during his life. The name "The Flying Dutchman" comes from Richard Wagner's opera about the lonely, eternally wandering skipper and describes the emotional state that August wanted to express.

August Strindberg is considered one of Sweden's most important writers, internationally known primarily as a playwright. Several of his works are considered classics in Swedish literature.

Artist: August Strindberg | Created: 1892.
