The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting The Avenue by August Strindberg.
The avenue in the painting is probably Djurgården in Stockholm. In the early 1900s, Strindberg lived in Östermalm and often took walks there. The iconic art collector Ernest Thiel was Sweden's richest man at the time and bought several paintings by Strindberg. In December 1905, August Strindberg wrote to his friend and artist Carl Larsson: " And Thiel, who was here today! Imagine that, and bought three paintings, including the yellow avenue with the great unknown in the background. Thanks for the help!". Carl Larsson had brokered the deal and Thiel had paid SEK 1,000 for the three paintings. At this time it was a large sum of money and August Strindberg was having financial difficulties.
August Strindberg (1849-1912) was a Swedish writer, playwright and artist. He is considered one of Sweden's most important writers, internationally known primarily as a playwright. Several of his works are considered classics in Swedish literature
