When There Was No Reverse Gear
The car is probably a German Kleinschnittger F 125—a microcar that actually had no reverse gear. It weighed around 170 kilos, so the solution was to lift the rear and turn the car around. A day-to-day trick from post-war Europe, where shortages and slim wallets drove the development of extremely light cars.

The story behind the motif

Finding parking in a period where cars were increasingly popular could be difficult. In the picture you see a woman who easily lifts her small antique car into place when pocket parking might feel difficult. The picture was taken during the 1950s, but we don't know exactly where the picture was taken, but our guess is the United States.

The car in the picture is probably a Kleinschnittger F 125. In principle, it is a motorcycle disguised as a car. As it was light, it was popular among those who traveled a lot, for example among those who worked at sea and needed to be able to lift on and off ships.
