When corals were given their own kingdom
In Lorenz Oken’s natural philosophy, corals were more than animals that were difficult to classify: he wanted to separate them from the animal kingdom and have them represent a third organic kingdom. The image belongs to the richly illustrated atlas that summarised his natural history for a broad audience in 1843.
