When Botany Was Medicine
The source image came from a medical handbook, not an ornamental flora. Medical Botany was published in London from 1834 to 1836 and brought together 185 hand-coloured plates of plants listed in the British pharmacopoeias—a meeting between nineteenth-century image-making and the world of pharmaceutical knowledge.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the illustration Leontodon taraxacum, also known as dandelion, from the 19th century.

The dandelion is a perennial herb commonly seen in gardens, meadows, roadsides and other open areas throughout the world. It is known for its ability to grow in tough conditions, which has coined the expression dandelion children: children who grew up and managed well despite contradictions and difficult circumstances.

The flower and pistil of the dandelion are the subject of many artistic interpretations and often symbolize beauty, tenacity and survival.
