When Grass Was Bark
In Lorenz Oken's botanical system, grasses belonged to the fourth of sixteen plant classes: Rindenpflanzen, or bark plants. The division does not follow modern botany, but an earlier attempt to arrange the plant kingdom according to the plant's structure. The plate was published in 1843 in a separate pictorial atlas to Oken's natural history for “all estates”.

The story behind the motif
Poster with the illustration Oak plant - a beautiful German illustration with various plants from the 19th century. At the top is the title text Rinden pflanzen - Grasses, German for Bark plants - Grass. In the picture we see everything from wheat to water lilies.

Lorenz Oken, the artist behind the work, was a prominent German naturalist and biologist. He collaborated with the engraver Johann Susemihl to produce a comprehensive encyclopedia called "Allgemeine Naturgeschichte für alle Stände" (General natural history for all classes of society) between 1839 and 1841.

The encyclopedia was published in seven volumes and its aim was to make science accessible and interesting to a wider audience by including illustrations of both animals and plants. These high-quality prints gave readers a visual understanding of the biodiversity that Oken explored and described.
