When the Home Became a Model
The watercolour formed part of the series Ett hem, but when Carl Larsson’s book of the same name was published in 1899, it contained 24 images – not all 26. The pictures from Lilla Hyttnäs turned the family home into a model of style, in which Karin Larsson’s furniture and textiles were a crucial part of the carefully conceived whole.

The story behind the motif

 

Poster with the painting Breakfast under the big birch by Carl Larsson from the year 1896. 

In the painting, Larsson presents a harmonious scene where the Larsson family enjoys breakfast outdoors under the shadowy crown of a large birch. Larsson himself expressed his love for the place, especially because of the large birch that offered cooling shade on hot summer days.

Larsson was known for depicting everyday life situations and for rendering them with a warm and bright atmosphere. He is best known for his paintings of idyllic Swedish home environments and family scenes, which have become characteristic of the Swedish art movement known as "Swedish home".
