The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting Idyll from sometime between 1880-1882 by Carl Larsson. The exact date of the painting is unknown, but it was probably painted in Paris as the female model has certain similarities to Gabrielle, who was the Frenchwoman with whom the Carl Larssons lived in the early 1880s.
The motif is among the few that Carl Larsson painted in which he reproduced a scene from contemporary Parisian life.
Carl Larsson is one of Sweden's most beloved artists of all time, known for his characteristic watercolors that celebrate an idyllic family life.
