A Study for Paris
The preliminary work formed part of Carl Larsson’s major commission for Pontus Fürstenberg’s private gallery: a triptych on the Renaissance, Rococo and contemporary art. When the completed series was shown at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1889, it attracted considerable attention – this painting preserves one step on the way there.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Study for Rococo by the famous Swedish artist Carl Larsson (1853-1919).

The painting shows a young woman sitting relaxed in a garden. She wears a flowery dress and wears a big hat. The painting, which dates from 1888, is reminiscent of the rococo style that was popular in the 18th century and is often characterized by elegant clothing, ornate settings and a feminine aesthetic. 

Carl Larsson was one of the most prominent Swedish artists during the late 1800s and early 1900s. He is known for his bright and harmonious paintings that often depict everyday life and the lifestyle of the Swedish upper class.
