An Interior Guide from 1899
The watercolour was made to be circulated, not merely hung in a studio. It was included in Ett hem, Carl Larsson’s 1899 book, whose images were intended as examples of how a home could be arranged. The paintings were therefore adapted for print, with clear lines and a palette of just four colours.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting The farm and brewhouse, From a Home (26 watercolors) by Carl Larsson from 1898. In the picture we see a fall red farm in a beautiful and sunny winter landscape. A child kicks in the untouched fresh snow and in the background at the brewery several people can be seen skating out on the ice.

The farm in the picture is probably known as Lilla Hyttnäs in Sundborn outside Falun, Dalarna where Carl Larsson and his wife Karin lived for many years. The farm is a very popular tourist destination today and is one of the world's most famous and depicted artists' homes.

Carl Larsson is one of Sweden's most beloved artists of all time, known for his characteristic watercolors that celebrate an idyllic family life.
