When the Railway Gates Controlled Traffic
In 1950, Tegelbacken was still one of Stockholm’s genuine bottlenecks: the railway crossed the site at street level, and the gates were lowered every time a train was to enter Central Station. The tracks did not disappear from the street until 1967, after the switch to driving on the right.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an old photograph from Stockholm in the 1950s. The black and white image is of a man transporting a model ship on a handcart.

The picture was taken at Tegelbacken , which was a very busy intersection between railway tracks, trams and car traffic. The brick back alley was a popular word in the 1940s and described the problem of road users waiting for the railway barriers to be opened several times an hour.
