The map with its own directory
When J. Whitbread published the plan on 26 February 1853, it came with a 29-page companion: a street register, text and catalogues. The map was therefore not intended to be used alone, but as a practical combination of city plan and reference book for anyone finding their way around London.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an old map of London from the 19th century. The map was illustrated by J.Whitbread and reads "Whitbread's new plan of London: drawn from authentic survey ".

This period marked London's status as the global epicenter, under the reign of Queen Victoria, who oversaw an expansive British Empire. The era witnessed the construction of many of London's now-iconic landmarks, fueled by Victoria's investment in showcasing England's power and prestige.

Embodying the spirit of the time, the map is a testament to the saying, "When you are tired of London, you are tired of life," capturing the city's endless allure and historical significance.

Illustrator: J Whitbread | Created: 1853.
