A Plate in a Maritime Lexicon
The illustration was not intended as a standalone image, but formed part of Victor Carlson’s lavish work on nineteenth-century maritime communication. The 1890 volume gathered 43 colour plates and also included a fold-out chart of the approach to Gothenburg – a compact overview of how seafarers navigated and signalled before the breakthrough of radio.

The story behind the motif
Poster with a nautical illustration from 1890 of various semaphores found on the coast of France. Semaphores are used to regulate maritime traffic and monitor fires along the coast. They were already built in the 1860s by Napoleon III and are owned by the French Navy. On the illustration we see the title text "Semaphores on the coast of France. Distant signals explanation".

The illustration comes from the book "Maritime Telegraph Systems, Buoys, Beacons, Tidal Signals ptr." created by Victor Carlsson, captain in the Swedish merchant navy. The book aims to document maritime signaling systems and includes 44 prints of maritime signaling systems from the time that existed around the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. These prints were illustrated by the General Staff Lithographic Institution.
