A Channel for Night-Time Steamers
The Duke of Edinburgh Channel was then almost new to night traffic. The channel in the Thames estuary was buoyed in 1882 and opened with lightships and light buoys on 18 December 1889. The 1890 overview thus captures a navigation system just as it was being adapted for London’s large steamships.

The story behind the motif
Poster featuring a unique nautical illustration from 1890 showing various sea marks and buoys for navigating British waterways. The various nautical marks help sailors to navigate, avoid dangers and find safe passages.
In the illustration, we see each seamark depicted with its unique appearance and the name of the channel or fairway in which it is located, such as "Prince's Channel" and "Duke of Edinburgh Channel".
The illustration was published with the book "Maritime Telegraph Systems, Buoys, Beacons, Tidal Signals ptr." created by Victor Carlsson, captain in the Swedish merchant navy. The book aimed to document maritime signaling systems and included 44 prints of maritime signaling systems from the time that existed around the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
Frame not included.
