A Chart Named for Its Originator
The year 1849 came nine years after Gustaf af Klint’s death. By then, his son Eric Gustaf had taken over the Swedish Maritime Chart Office, where older charts were continually corrected with new discoveries and changes. The map thus bears traces of two generations of Swedish nautical knowledge.

The story behind the motif

During 1849, the North Sea was an important part of maritime trade and shipping in Europe. The region was important for trade routes and fishing, and it was also of strategic importance to many countries along its coasts, including Great Britain, Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands.

The North Sea served as an important link between the countries of northern Europe and was a significant trade route for goods such as grain, timber, fish and other products. Many ports along the North Sea coast were busy trading centers where goods were transhipped between ships and transported on to different destinations.
