An atlas with a list of sources
Ortelius did not present his world atlas as a one-man work. In the 1570 edition he added the Catalogus Auctorum, a list of 87 cartographers whose work had been used. This was unusually open at a time when maps were often copied without clear acknowledgement.

The story behind the motif

This poster showcases the first modern atlas and world map, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, crafted in 1570 by the acclaimed Flemish artist and geographer Abraham Ortelius. Ortelius is credited with the groundbreaking hypothesis that the continents were once a single landmass before drifting to their present locations, a theory supported by the striking geometric congruence between the American and Euro-African coastlines. Suggesting continental drift as the underlying cause, his work is a cornerstone in the field of geography. Original Ortelius maps are highly sought after by collectors, fetching significant sums, and stand as treasures of cartographic history.
