A Map Out of Time
Printed in Cologne in 1572, but actually a portrait of Paris around 1530. The plan still shows buildings and city gates that had already disappeared several decades before its publication. It thus becomes a peculiar time capsule: a late-Renaissance publication preserving an older city.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful map of Paris illustrated in 1572 by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg.

In the 16th century, the Renaissance arrived in Paris. It was expressed in the city's architecture, art and cultural life. The kings of France returned to Paris from the Loire Valley and in 1534 Francis I became the first French king to make the Louvre his residence.
