The map that was meant to become round
The print was never intended to lie flat. In 1891, Rand McNally issued it as two sheets with so-called globe segments—strips of map intended to be pasted over a sphere approximately 31 centimetres in diameter. The division only becomes fully logical when the map once again takes the form of a globe.
