A Style Bearing His Name
Ogata Kōrin’s surname became so closely associated with his visual language that the later Rinpa school was named after him. He came from a wealthy textile-merchant family in Kyoto and began painting full-time only in his forties – yet his style also became a model for ceramics and lacquerware.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the famous illustration Japanese Red Crowned Crane off Ogata Korin from the beginning of the 18th century. The illustration shows a flock of Japanese cranes against a yellow background. The birds symbolize happiness, longevity and peace in Japanese culture.

Ogata Korin (1658–1716) was a leading artist of Japan's Edo period and is known for his paintings of nature and portraits of animals, in keeping with the Japanese fascination with nature at the time.
