Who was John Bauer?
John Bauer (1882–1918) is one of Sweden’s most beloved artists and a central figure in early 20th-century Swedish illustration. He is known for his enchanting motifs drawn from Norse mythology, troll forests, and fairytale beings. Raised in Jönköping, with the deep forests of Småland as a source of inspiration, he developed a unique visual language that remains instantly recognizable to this day.
He studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and achieved his major breakthrough through the illustrations for the fairy tale collection Among Gnomes and Trolls, which began publication in 1907. Here he created some of his most iconic works – images that came to define the visual expression of the Swedish fairytale tradition.
